How to Bet on the NHL Playoffs

The NHL playoffs use best-of-seven series with no shootouts; only sudden death overtime. This changes how several bet types work compared to the regular season.

Moneyline

Pick which team wins the game. Simplest NHL bet. Includes overtime and shootout in regular season, but playoffs have no shootouts, so OT periods play until someone scores.

Example Colorado Avalanche -160 to beat Dallas Stars. Bet $160 to win $100.

Puck Line (1.5)

Hockeys version of the point spread. The favorite must win by 2+ goals (-1.5), or the underdog can lose by 1 and still cover (+1.5). Because ~48% of NHL games are decided by 1 goal, the puck line dramatically shifts odds vs moneyline.

Example Avalanche -1.5 (+145) means Colorado must win by 2+. Stars +1.5 (-170) means Dallas can lose by 1 and you still win.

Over/Under (Totals)

Bet on whether the combined goals scored by both teams will be over or under a number set by the sportsbook. NHL totals typically range from 5.0 to 6.5. Playoff games historically trend UNDER: tighter defense, better goaltending, lower pace.

Example Over/Under 5.5 goals. If the game finishes 3-2, the total is 5; Under wins.

Series Winner

Bet on which team wins a best-of-seven playoff series. Available only during the postseason. No need to pick individual games; just who advances. Typically better odds than game-by-game moneylines.

Example Tampa Bay -245 to beat Montreal in their first-round series. Canadiens +200 to pull the upset.

Stanley Cup Futures

Bet on which team will win the Stanley Cup before the playoffs begin (or during). Odds change as teams advance or get eliminated. Early bets offer the best value.

Example Colorado +300 means a $100 bet returns $400 total if the Avalanche win the Cup.

Player Props

Bet on individual player performance: goals, assists, points, shots on goal, saves. Playoff player props are especially popular for stars like MacKinnon, McDavid, and Vasilevskiy.

Period Betting
